Putting it all together - a proper sauna experience
Proper saunas must have at least three separate functional rooms. These are:
- Front room with tables and chairs - keeping your stuff, taking shoes off, socializing, talking, eating, drinking, just sitting between turns.
- Shower room. Should be warm, where you can also dress you cannot do it in the front room. It absolutely must not have the humidity and hotness that the most important room of the sauna has.
- The jewel of the crown is the sauna hot room itself.
Allocate plenty of time for yourself. Have a barbecue with friends, eat, drink, talk. When things start properly rolling and the sauna has heated up, undress, take a shower. Enter the heat room. If you prefer it, you are welcome to leave a towel on. Check that the wooden benches are not too hot as to pinch your bottom. Sit down gradually or sit onto a towel, a special piece of wood, foam or paper. In home environments sitting down on plain wood is the common practice.
There is no defined timeframe. It is not a competition - take a break when you feel like it. Taking a break can involve sitting in the common room. Or just run outside, sit on the porch, swim, roll in the snow or throw snowballs at each other. When you start feeling chilly, go inside and repeat the cycle!
When you go in the second time, your skin will be soft, so you can also use a viht to gently beat your feet, arms and your body. It feels pleasurable and stimulates your blood-flow. Repeat the cycle as often as you like.
When calling it a day, wait a bit after the last heat session before you wash yourself. Perspiration does not stop immediately. Washing yourself while still sweating is an effort in vain. Cool down a bit, have a refreshing drink and then shower.
See you next time!
